Course Overview
This course has been developed in direct response to requests from parents, schools, teachers and allied professionals, for effective Asperger specific training. It provides an in-depth route to understanding the complexity of Asperger syndrome and focuses on strategies and approaches to address the need for increased awareness, knowledge, techniques and support for practitioners working in the area. The online course is offered by the National Autistic Society NAS and ICEP Europe and participants will receive expert tutor support from NAS practitioners who have been working directly with children, families, schools and educational organisations for many years.
Who is this course aimed at?
This course has been specially designed for education professionals and practitioners, inclusion managers, educational psychologists, mentors, SENCos and learning support coordinators, LA support team members, learning support staff, early years teachers and allied professionals.
Course Content
This course will give participants an insight into the lived experience of children and young people with Asperger syndrome by reviewing personal, professional and family perspectives on the issue. This course will also explore Asperger syndrome in terms of its social and educational implications. Participants will gain skills in recognising the strengths, differences and difficulties that these children present with, assess their learning needs, and learn how to develop strategies for intervening in the area of communication and socialisation.
The course will focus on practical approaches and evidence-based strategies which will support learning, promote personal development, and address the challenges that may emerge across these students’ school careers. Areas covered will include: language and communication, theory of mind, social isolation, teasing and bullying, special interests, cognitive abilities, motor and sensory differences, individual and family perspectives on Asperger syndrome, and best practice approaches to educational support. A wide range of issues will be covered in the course: from the pathways and processes involved in identification and diagnostic assessment, to common differences and difficulties, and the educational and behavioural strengths and challenges associated with Asperger syndrome.

Assessment & Award
Each student is required to:
- Read the course material for each of the five course modules; and,
- Complete the interactive learning assignment at the end of each module.
On successful completion of the course, students will receive a Certificate of Professional Development.
