Positive Interventions for Schools and Classrooms

Course Overview

This course has been developed by Dr Deirdre MacIntyre and Dr Moya O’Brien, Directors of ICEP Europe, together with a panel of experienced educators. Both Dr O’Brien and Dr MacIntyre are experienced clinical psychologists and have worked with young people, children, families and schools for many years.

Educators today are facing huge challenges, a more diverse learning population and a growing range of discipline and behaviour management issues in schools and classrooms. The necessity for sound and effective behaviour management policies and practices are widely acknowledged, and training in behaviour management skills is now seen as central to effective learning and teaching and to positive relationships within school settings.

Who is this course aimed at?

This course is aimed at teachers and others with a professional interest in supporting and managing students in a classroom situation. It may also be helpful for parents interested in learning about the appropriate educational provision in behaviour management skills for children and young people in the classroom.

Key Course Information

  • The course comprises 5 interactive learning modules, each taking approximately four hours online study time to complete, or 20 hours in total
  • Learning is self-paced, allowing you to design your own study schedule around existing commitments, and giving you total freedom and flexibility
  • On completion of the course you will receive a Certificate of Continuing Professional Development which can be included in your CPD portfolio
  • Completion of an Interactive Assignment at the end of each module gives you the opportunity to review the key learning points from the module and how they can be applied in practice.
  • Participants are encouraged to interact with each other via the online discussion forum, allowing learners to enter active discussions with their colleagues and receive feedback from the expert course tutors.

Course Content

Designed for professionals working both at primary and secondary level, this course will introduce you to a wide range of models, methods and strategies for supporting and managing student behaviour, with particular emphasis on the effective management of students who have special educational needs and/or exhibit behavioural and adjustment problems. You will gain practical skills in responding to challenging student behaviour in the classroom and implementing positive classroom interventions with the aim of promoting relationships of mutual respect and enhancing the learning/teaching process for all students.

What characterises effective well-disciplined schools? How can schools develop and implement effective school-wide discipline or positive behaviour policies? To answer these questions we examine findings from best practice research and the experiences of effective schools. We provide templates for the process of planning, implementing and evaluating behaviour support and discipline policies and examine how to support staff and prevent burnout. Further topics covered are problem solving, communication skills, social skills training, anger management and conflict resolution in primary and post primary settings. Preventative strategies and approaches for encouraging and fostering a positive school environment and relationships are also covered in depth.

Students Comments

“The course was very practical and realistic in terms of dealing with discipline issues and managing student behaviour in the classroom. I liked the fact that the tutor was readily available for queries/comments and the discussion board was so honest (talking to other teachers who may be in a similar situation, hearing techniques that worked well for them in their classrooms & learning from one another).”

“This course was informative, practical, realistic, comprehensive, well researched, encouraging and enjoyable. I cannot say that at any point I found the experience of the course to be a drag! Thank you.”

(Participant on the Supporting and Managing Student Behaviour Course, spring 2008)

"In conclusion I feel I have learned a lot from this course. As many other participants have alluded to, some of it is about putting names to things you are doing already, but what is heartening about that is that it is also being presented as good practice. This course has broadened my understanding of, and my repertoire of strategies for responding to, different types of behaviour."

(Participant on the Supporting and Managing Student Behaviour Course, summer 2008)

"I have found the course very informative and practical; the information/advice given isn't too extreme that it can't be used everyday. Their is plenty of food for thought within it and I love the whole idea of developing my communication skills with the pupils in order to have constructive feedback from them. I also have found having to reflect back on my own work has made me highlight my weaknesses so that I can now improve them. Instead of always taking the easy option and blaming the class/student I now think it is very important to look at yourself first and to work from there."
