Course Overview
The most crucial variable associated with student achievement is good classroom management. Its importance has been highlighted across numerous research studies over many years. Being an effective teacher means having the ability to create an optimal learning environment for all students. This process requires ongoing development and application of a range of appropriate management skills every day and in every class. We know that effective teachers create and maintain an orderly, stimulating and motivating learning environment. This environment is purposeful, safe and supportive while being positive and enjoyable. It is also a place where self-discipline, responsibility and creativity are fostered and where students develop an awareness of the consequences of their own behaviour. The environment enhances each student’s psychological, emotional and physical well-being and encourages effective resolution of conflict. This course helps teachers to advance their skills in creating effective learning environments at the whole-school and the classroom level.

Course Content
This course provides the latest research, detailed information and practical skills and strategies essential to running an effective and well managed classroom. It will equip you with in-depth understanding and knowledge of the critical importance of classroom management and its role in the overall behaviour and discipline of students in schools. The course builds on your existing capacity to manage your classroom effectively thus creating an environment that maximises learning for all students.
Classroom management is not just about behaviour or misbehaviour although using student behaviours as criteria for assessing the effectiveness of classroom management makes sense since one of the main goals is to foster student cooperation and involvement in learning. You will be encouraged to examine your own practice and develop and implement best practice approaches and policies at the level of the classroom and in your own school in relation to supporting all students.
The focus of the course is to help teachers to develop a learning place where respect and responsibility are fostered and where students and teachers work together towards mutual goals of learning and behaviour.
The course provides a review of existing tried and tested techniques for managing classrooms effectively. Topics include; implications of effective classroom management; characteristics of effective classroom management in teachers; making positive connections and motivating reluctant learners; setting up effective classrooms; setting expectations for behaviour; managing inappropriate behaviour; promoting appropriate consequences; managing academic work; encouraging student self-discipline, self-respect and responsibility; promoting choice and autonomy.
