Interventions for Developmental Disabilities
Course Overview
This course has been developed by Dr Moya O'Brien, Director of ICEP Europe, with assistance from Dr Sean Carey, Principal Psychologist. Both Dr O'Brien and Dr Carey are experienced Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) practitioners.
Applied Behaviour Analysis is a precise, systematic and measurable method for teaching children with developmental disabilities to learn. It is based on sound behavioural principles and evidence-based research and practice. Essentially an educational method, it has a wide range of applications, particularly within the field of developmental disabilities. These areas include teaching children with developmental disabilities, including autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder, intervention with problem behaviours, and parenting. The course is designed to actively engage students in learning both the analytical skills and the practical techniques of ABA.
Who is this course aimed at?
While this course is primarily designed for teachers and allied professionals, it may also be helpful for parents who want more detailed information about the development and education of children and young people.

Student Comments
"Having some previous experience in using the principles of ABA I found the course tied together a lot information that would have been floating around in my head into a very systematic and structured manner. Many useful examples and strategies were given which I feel I would be confident using in my own classroom. Thanks to the team in ICEP!"

"I feel the course is so good that it would be worth publishing a handbook of manual for parents of autistic children or even tutors. I would call it the 'ABC of ABA'. So many of the fundamental principles of ABA can be applied to working with children that are not special needs that it would also be a wonderful manual for parenting and teachers in the classroom. It would be so handy to have a manual with loads of ABC charts and blank graph charts etc in a binder folder."

"This particular course was extremely beneficial to me and I'm sure to many others also. It was different to any other course I've done before, but I would definitely consider doing another one again. I will be recommending it to other people, who I think would quite enjoy it. The course content will also be very handy to look back on from time to time. Applied Behaviour Analysis is something that a lot more people know about nowadays and I hope many more will gain." knowledge of it in years to come.
(Course Participant Summer 2008)
"I felt that nearly every aspect of the course involved some key point of learning for me, raised issues in light of my own experiences and lead me to think of some way I could incorporate the techniques into my daily practice. This is why I found the course so enjoyable, interesting and informative."
